Letter From The President

The main message that I want to pass on at this time is my recognition that the foundation of the EPPA is its membership. I’d like the membership to know that I am aware of the contributions that have been made in previous years.  A few of the contributions made by the membership that stand out in my mind are:

-         The excellent participation at the last Muttart Show, the Sand’s Show, and Pet Expo. We also provided a presence at the “Pets in the Park”.

-         The effort involved in getting up early in order to bring birds to TV promotions.

-         The work involved in the fundraising that was done – contacting organizations, picking up donations, and issuing the appropriate “thank you” follow ups.

-         The potluck June BBQ luncheon and the potluck Christmas supper that was brought by members and enjoyed by all.

-         The work required to arrange for Super Pet staff to bring Grover, the hyacinth macaw – what a darling he was! Everyone wanted to hold him and he obviously enjoyed it.

-         The work required to arrange for a representative from Hagen’s to come and speak to us about nutrition. He educated and entertained us with his stories about his own birds. What a great presentation he gave!

-         The regular effort involved by the phone committee in reminding members of the next meeting and other events as they came up.

So many people participated in these events that I can’t recall and name everyone, so I’m just going to say, “Thank you and you know who you are”.

It is the membership that will determine the future success of the EPPA. The current executive recognizes this fact and wants to do whatever it can to mold the EPPA into the kind of association that you want it to be. Presently we are trying to come up with ideas to encourage and reward participation. Please feel free to share your thoughts.

Joke of The Month

GOING, GOING, GONE!

One day a man went to an auction. While there, he bid on an exotic parrot. He really wanted this bird, so he got caught up in the bidding. He kept on bidding, but kept getting outbid, so he bid higher and higher and higher. Finally, after he bid way more than he intended, he won the bid - the fine bird was finally his! As he was paying for the parrot, he said to the Auctioneer, "I sure hope this parrot can talk. I would hate to have paid this much for it, only to find out that he can't talk!" "Don't worry", said the Auctioneer, "He can talk. Who do you think kept bidding against you?"

Gazette Tidbits

HOMEMADE TOYS: Use dried bagels as toys either as a hand toy or a strung toy. Mini bagels dried would be good for smaller birds. Please remember never to string any toy with a double strand of chain, rope or string, as the bird might get entangled or strangle itself when it twists around.

Go to your local hardware store and ask for the key rejects. Sometimes, instead of getting credit for them, they will give them to you and they make sturdy playtoys.

Take a plastic soda bottle or juice bottle with the plastic (only) cap and put some special bird treats inside. Watch the bird play with it trying to get them out.

*We make toys out of sterilized lids (pop, detergent, etc.). We poke a hole in the center and put them on a non-coated hanger.
